A kitchen in full swing bears a striking resemblance to an ensemble in concert. The tension and the dense energy, the choreography of hands moving in perfect synchronicity and the combined action of the group offer a wonderful spectacle. Patatboem blended these two worlds in a theatrical context. The musicians and the cooks gave a sparkling performance - and the food was for real.
The chef and dramatist Peter De Bie (Peep & Eat, Coupe Royale etc) and the composer/musician Peter Vermeersch (The Flat Earth Society, composer for Rosas, Vandekeybus, Bruges 2002 House Orchestra, etc.) add the sensory element to stage productions. Together with 4 other musicians they cook and play music for the audience at the same time. The aromas and tastes set the tone of this surprising culinary-musical show. Patatboem starts from the premise that there is a remarkable similarity between the tension and energy experienced by chefs in a kitchen, just prior to serving a large meal, and the level of concentration between musicians prior to and during a concert. Patatboem turns into a kitchen concert in which the interaction between music and food is being explored in all its different facets. A total performance for which one's senses need to be on the alert. At the end of the performance the meal that has been cooked is served to the 192 people in the audience.
