An artist loved by the audience and close to Emilia Romagna Teatro that in the last few years produced for us many of his shows - Dentro un sole giallo (2005), Otra vez, Marcelo (2006) and Odissea (2009) – comes back to Modena, eagerly-awaited, César Brie.
César Brie presents as world première at VIE, his last masterpiece Karamazov, freely adapted from the book “ The Karamazov brothers” by Fëdor Dostoevskij, final result of the work made with the students of the professionalizing process for young actors of the ”Arts site”, of which he is director.
Brie works on the amount of topics contained in the works of the Russian writer and in particular on the last book by Dostoevskij, written just a few moths before his death: faith, passion, vice, love, justice. The novel is also a critic against religious fundamentalism, sects, socialism and capitalism of which he foreshadows horrors and failure. A bitter smile about human idiocy and foolishness.

According to Brie, every character of this novel represents human soul’s paradigms: “passion and instinct (Dimitri), reason and doubt (Ivan); goodness and purity (Alekséj); rancour and revenge (Smerdjakov);meanness, sentimentalism, selfishness and hedonism (Fedor il padre); holiness (lo Starets)… Even children, almost always silent and motionless, show up.[...] Infant pain run across the whole novel and takes us back to the pain of every war, to pain injustice as human measure, of which innocents suffer the punishment”.
Along with the artist’s sensitivity, stressing the ethic, moral and spiritual entail of Russian literature masterpiece, Brie takes to the scene the book, showing up social topics.
Brie works on a bare scene inhabited only by the actors, few objects and musical instruments , letting them talk: “I see in the staging children’s puppets, ropes, hanged clothes and actors. Actors make plurality intimate and intimate the social. Voices talk with dissent, with a really bare-bones text. I hope it will comes out grotesque and carnival meaning hidden in the novel."
This July, César Brie has been recognized by the Italian companies as a “Master of the Scene” and for that, he was awarded in the aimed Festival of Radicondoli. The prize is dedicated to Nico Garrone, drama critic who is working for “La Repubblica” newspaper. He has been creator and director of the festival, until his death in 2009.

César Brie

César Brie was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He arrived in Italy when he was 18 years old with the Comuna Baires, a theatre group of which he’s the cofounder, playing in several production directed by Renzo Casali and Liliana Duca.
With this group he started to develop a stateless art, in harness with many realities he had encountered in his life spent, by choice, in exile. After 1975 he founded in Milan the theatre company Tupac Amaru; we mention, among the plays he has produced, Ehi, in collaboration with Danio Manfredini. From 1981 to 1990 he worked with Iben Nagel Rasmussen in the group Farfa and then in the Odin Teatret as author, director and actor.
Among others play we mention Matrimonio con Dio and Talabot directed by Eugenio Barba. After these experiences he founded in 1991 in Bolivia the theatre Il Teatro de los Andes. With this group he created plays inspired by historical events or by literature classics, even if deeply involved in the actuality. It grows out a series of marvellous plays destined to a world tour (Romeo e Giulietta, Ubu in Bolivia, Solo gli ingenui muoiono d’amore, Dentro un sole giallo, Fragile, Otra vez Marcelo… l’Iliade, Odissea).
César Brie took part also in other productions, as author or director: Il cielo degli altri, produced in Italy in collaboration with the actors of the Teatro Setaccio; Zio Vanja by Anton Cechov, directed together with Isadora Angelini; Todos los ausentes realized in Santiago del Cile with the actor Hector Noguera from Teatro Camino; he wrote I Clienti directed by Giancarlo Gentilucci for Arti e Spettacolo
