NATIONAL PREMIERE

One of the most famous plays by Calderón de la Barca, belonging to the Spanish Golden Century, will be presented at VIE, under the direction of Galin Stoev.
The main theme of the play is the “unreality of reality”. Sigismondo, an imaginary prince of an unknown far away land, is forced, by a series of different events, to have some strange experiences bordering between dream and wake.
This change in perspective induces Sigismondo to mix up the two levels of reality and fiction, making him feel that life is nothing but a dream.
Exemplary of all the Spanish Baroque and very important to Calderón de la Barca, this theme is imbued with Christianity and, in particular, it derives from Christian pessimism which leads to consider the ephemeral nature of earthly things.
In this work the characters’ lives appear like alchemical experiments in which the autonomy of people’s actions is very much at stake. The characters undergo a series of successive transformations. During this process, we constantly move from reality to dream and from dream to reality.
Through this continuous changes, Sigismondo finds a way to invent his own humanity. But it is really hard to get to that. In the end redemption is possible only through an arduous path, though happiness is never thoroughly achieved.

Galin Stoev

From Bulgaria where he was born (Varna - 1969) and where he started his career as a director, to Belgium where he lives today, it was the theatre – and more particularly directing – which has influenced the career of Galin Stoev. Graduate of the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts (Sofia), he has worked since 1991 as a director and comedian in Sofia, producing a number of shows at the National Theatre (For instance: Madame de Sade by Mishima, Le cercle de craie caucasien by Bertolt Brecht et Arcadia by Tom Stoppard-Prize for the Best Production in 2001). Listed at the core of his decisive experiences is notably his meeting with the author Viripaev and the friendship which links them. It was in 2002 that Galin produced his first play by Viripaev, Les Rêves, presented at Varna International Festival. The Bulgarian version of Oxygène at Théâtre 199 then followed in 2003, where the show ran for a long time.
When the Festival Europalia Bulgariein was held in 2002, Galin Stoev was invited to Brussels by CIFAS. His course, titled Antiquité urbaine, was when he met with Céline Bolomey, Stéphane Oertli (Cie Fraction Bruxelles) and Antoine Oppenheim. They decided to continue the journey with him: at first Antigone, then the French version of Oxygène. Awarded the prize from the panel of judges during the Emulation festival in 2005, this show started a worldwide tour. In 2006, he created Tchékhologie from texts by Anton Tchékhov, on show at Théâtre Marni. In the same breath, Galin set up his own company FINGERPRINT with which, in October of the same year, he devised Genèse n°2 by Ivan Viripaev, in co-production with Théâtre de la Place/Liège. This show was put on at the Avignon Festival in July 2007.
It should also be said that Galin Stoev has been invited in his capacity as artist in residence to the Royal National Theatre in London, to the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds, to Académie Internationale de Théâtre in Bochum, and to the Academie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart. Galin Stoev has also directed several projects with Oskar Strasnoy, of which Histoire, an operetta by Gombrowicz was presented in 2004 at the Opéra de Stuttgart, at the Opéra de Lille and at Teatro Colon de Buenos Aires.
In response to the invitation from Comédie Française, Galin staged La Festa de Spiro Scimone in March 2007 at Théâtre du Vieux Colombier.
He is currently working on his next piece: La vie est un rêve from La vie est un songe by Pedro Calderon which will be shown at the Théâtre de la Place / Liège in September 2010.
