Atlante del bianco is the production that marks the official debut of the Compagnia Damasco Corner, a group made up of visually-impaired dancers based on a project by Virgilio Sieni. It is the product of a long and meticulous process carried out by Virgilio Sieni and his team of collaborators along with a group of visually-impaired youngsters, with a unique and meaningful purpose: the foundation of the first visually-impaired youth dance group for the production of performances, and a training project for visually-impaired dance instructors, open to others in the field as well.
Atlante del bianco aims to explore the dimensions of space and volume understood as an ineluctable force, and to identify empty space with the process of emptying. The work’s origins lie in a search for man’s instinctual attraction to nature, a sort of structure dotted with points of origin in dialogue with a subtle dramaturgy based on the idea of orientation and tactility: the outline, the imprint, following paths, giving shape to a constellation of encounters.
Compagnia Damasco Corner/Virgilio Sieni
Damasco Corner is a choreographic experimentation group made up of visually-impaired boys and girls, headquartered at CANGO Cantieri Goldonetta in Florence. The project originated in late 2008 under the aegis of the Academy of the art of the gesture, thanks to an encounter between the choreographer Virgilio Sieni with two blind youngsters, Giuseppe Comuniello and Dorina Meta. These two, who had no previous dance experience, constituted the group’s initial nucleus.
The Academy of the art of the gesture is a Virgilio Sieni project that springs from the choreographer’s CANGO Cantieri Goldonetta experience and has developed through a series of artistic processes of studio work and teaching of movement, in a continuous experimentation with languages. Children, senior citizens, dancers and artists participate in projects in which training, creation and vision interweave in an organic approach to the body and to art. A continuum of experiences laid out in a geography of cities and territories, forming a network of places dedicated to artistic experimentation and practice.
