Performed by The Department of Acting (5th year students),
University of Tampere, Finland

Length 1h

The Department of Acting has visited ERT twice before with an Italian speaking performance in 2003 and 2006.
From 1996 on the acting students at Tampere University have performed in productions done either in Spanish (3) or Italian (2), without any previous capacity in those languages. What was originally a sligthly freakish idea has become the back bone of actor´s training as it is practiced by us.

We have found that the use of a foreign language questions the body idioms that are connected with one´s native tongue, and the stage clichés that go along with them. Having endured the obscurity of the cloud of unknowing hiding the semantic sun of the dramatic text, and having emerged from there to a new clarity of performance, these students feel that they can face any future challenge.

Café Moravia draws its dialogue from the short stories of Alberto
Moravia (L´automa), two essays by him (L´uomo come fine and
Machiavelli) and Finnish lyrical folk poetry (Kanteletar) in
translation by Renzo Porceddu.
