Based on the eponymous poem by Arendt, Dancer puts on stage Tasos Dimas, one of the founding members of the company Attis, and the same Theodoros Terzopoulos as narrator. The greek director compares here himself with one of the most important figures of the post-war literature, the German poet, essayist and translator Erich Arendt, and with one of his most important works.
Dancer achieves an artistic transgression creating a new genre between poetry and theater. Dancer (1973), inspired by the Minoan fresco, depicting the bullfighting, is perhaps the most renowned among the, so called, greek poems written by Arendt. The main theme of Dancer is the conflict between two powers that concludes to total destruction. Those two powers, although seeming to be extremely opponent, they also complete one another. They could also be interpreted as the logic, in one hand, and the instinct, in the other. Thus, we could say that in Dancer we have the concentration of the deep core of ancient tragedy.
