Paolo Musìo, Italian actor who worked with many famous directors such as Trionfo, Patroni Griffi, Testori, Squarzina, Castri, Nanni, Terzopoulos, Cirillo, Nekrosius, Ronconi, Cobelli, Martone, Arcuri, presents in VIE his new work, Voce, created in collaboration with the Danish artist Thirsten Kirchhoff. In this monologue the words by Musìo are melting with the images by Kirchhof, artist who addresses his research to the creation of paintings, visual creations and sound works, using an archive of images taken from a cinematographic repertoire. The only character is the Man, on stage with his existential conflicts, in endless quest for answers. The actor becomes then a sort of hamletic character plunged in a suspended time, surrounded by the visual elements by Kirchhof, in an atmosphere that creates a scenic path where light and shade live in a symbiotic relation.
“I am an actor and I write texts and adaptations. I started my research with the aim to dismantle and simplify the text, towards a better communication. I am trying to dismantle everything that looks accessory, made only to please the viewer, everything that is made to be recognized. Quotation, technology.
I need an empty space that can take my breath away. A place in which I don’t know what to do, in which I have no idea what to say.
To simplify is a necessary action, when there’s urgency and in a certain sense danger.
To deeply analyze is a necessary action, so that only the things we hold dear and for which we spent time, have any chance to blossom.
Being an actor, I try to follow the way of the energy of my body, in order to obtain spaces of freedom.
Being a dramaturg, I look for the rhythmic and physic aspect of the text, I try to connect the two faces of the word, the written element and its public pronunciation, trying to transform them in a single action, showing either their intimacy – a natural born feature of the words – and their public being, in which the text is transformed when spoken.
Sometimes I fight for bending the literature to my own purpose, sometimes I lose the fight, but I still have to make many mistakes. I create texts that are like a mortal machinery, tending to grind those who live in it. I am interested in this conflict, which turns to be a struggle where a man undertakes an action and he has to face the consequences, showing to the audience the continuous and repeated failures.
It seems to me that this image symbolizes very well the human adventure.
I would like to lead my research towards an authentic contemplative dimension, which means not only to create an evocative atmosphere but to find a place in which everyone can emotionally participate and be part of the conflict and at the same time has the chance to observe it in the distance.”

Thorsten Kirchhoff
Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1960 Thorsten Kirchhoff lives and works in Rome from 1984. In his work Kirchhoff takes a refined, ironic, provocative and surreal position at the same time. His unique approach embraces modernism but also paradox and the dark side of human life. In its exploration of the infinite range of emotions, Kirchhoff uses paintings, installations and especially film, transforming the reversal of the sense almost in a rule that combines elements seemingly without relevance.
